Engaging Men & Fathers
- Men as victims of domestic violence: some issues to consider. DVIRC Discussion Paper no.2, 2002. The second in DVIRC's occasional Discussion Paper takes as it focus research purporting to show that women are as violent as men in relationships.
- 2009 Men and Family Relationship Forum Papers. Papers include: Making the reduction of family violence an everyday response, Alan Blackburn; The importance of father reflective functioning, Dawson Cook; Revisiting men’s violence programs, Warick Pudney and Stuart Anderson; Fathering at the heart of early childhood, Dr Richard Fletcher; and Intimate partner abuse of men, Gary Bryant among others.
- Issues and concerns for men contacting Mensline Australia, Ian Thomas, AIFRC (2009). This paper draws on information provided from 68,612 calls from men to the 1300 service over 12 months between July 2006 and June 2007. Almost half of the calls were from men who lived alone. The main relationship concerns for callers included separation from wife or partner and issues with a current wife or partner.
- AFRC Briefing No. 9 2008 - Father-inclusive practice and associated professional competencies, by Richard Fletcher, University of Newcastle. It is widely accepted that, over recent decades, fathers' roles have changed to include more care of infants and young children. In this paper, the research relating to fathers' involvement with children is described and the evidence of effective practice for including fathers is summarised. Factors that may influence fathers' involvement with services are reported. The competence of practitioners to engage with fathers, when they do come into contact with the services, is also discussed.
- Mothers and fathers accessing Family Relationship Centres, (2008), Richard Fletcher, Family Relationships Quarterly 10, Australian Family Relationship Clearinghouse (AFRC). Others articles in this issue include circumstances and challenges for sole parents, a program spotlight on the Well Ways and Well Ways Duo programs run by the Mental Illness Fellowship, trends and statistics article on data from the General Parent Population Survey and a review of the 10th Australian Institute of Family Studies Conference Review.
- The Working with men kit. This program is designed to support organisations that work with men and family relationships. It provides a variety of resources for establishing a male-friendly environment and also psycho-educational group work programs for men.
- Mensline Australia Tip Sheets. These information sheets are vital in working with men as they provide a tangible tool for them to digest in their own time. Each sheet is available online or in a printer friendly version. The tip sheets also connect men with the MensLine Australia Phoneline and Call-back Service.
